Is it too early to panic?
Panic about the Indians, for me, and panic about the Tigers for people in Detroit. The simple answer is that it's way too early to panic. Now, if this were the NFL season, you'd be beyond panic, and trying to figure out who you'll pick first in the upcoming draft. But it's not, it's the MLB season, which isn't even 10% through.
Here's the caveat though. While it's not too early to panic, it's never to early for some legitimate concerns. It would be foolish to deny the fact that the slow start by Sabathia and an even slower start by the Tigers are going to fade away into forgotten MLB history lore. The reason that they started out like this isn't for some mysterious reasons, but for legitimate issues. Issues that could resurface say, around October.
Enough about the Tigers, but more about Sabathia, because I need to vent somewhat quickly before my head explodes. Never has a Cy Young award winner been so terrible as C.C. the season following bagging the award, and that's something to worry about. One start, it happens. Three starts in a row? That's a worrysome trend. I watched the game last night, and Sabathia looked beyond terrible. He wasn't making pitches, he was just throwing the ball. And let's be honest, it's not just the last three games that have been bad for C.C., it's the last 7.
He wasn't terrible against the Yankees, but he was more lucky than good. He barely lasted 5 innings - giving up only 3 runs, but walking 6. He got tattooed against Boston in Game 1 giving up 8 runs in 4.1. Followed that up by another poor, but not terrible outing, lasting only 6 and giving up 4 runs. This year has been much much worse though: He doesn't have a win in 4 games, hasn't gotten through the 5th inning, and has not given up less than 4 runs. Epic Fail.
Can he turn it around? I sure hope so. He obviously has the talent, but his mind is clearly in the wrong place. Could it be the pressure? In the playoffs, and in a contract year he's not been as good as he was the year before. Whatever it is, he needs to fix it fast, because without him being nearly as good as he was last year, the Indians are just going nowhere fast.
